Leader of NELC Warns Government Minister of the Crippling Effect of Increases in Port Rate Demands
The leader of North East Lincolnshire Council joined Grimsby MP Austin Mitchell at Westminster to make the case for a review of the system which could cost South Bank firms an extra £20-million.
The new bill will include backdating business rates for more than three years, after a change in the system which was made in 2003 has only just been introduced.
Coun De Freitas said following the meeting with Local Government Minister, John Healey
”He certainly knew what was going on, but I think he was a little bit surprised about some of the detail in relation to the ports of Grimsby and Immingham.
“We also drew his attention to the fact we have a potential redundancy situation with 530 people at Mariner Foods. I said it was all well and good the Government giving us LEGI money and other funding, but if we are not careful we could create a situation where employment problems are going to get worse and it would mean Government having to spend a lot more money than they are now
