Shed, Garage Burglary and Garden Crime

Local Crime Reduction Officer, PC Gary Starkie, would like everyone in this area to concentrate on the security of garages, sheds and gardens at this time of year.

Here are a few guidance tips:

• Take a look at just how difficult it would be to break in.  Beef up the lock as forcing this is the most common method of entry. Make sure the screws around the lock and door hinges are not visible. Make sure the shed roof cannot be lifted off. Install extra security on up and over doors
• Install a simple shed/garage alarm so you have warning if anyone does break in.
• Do not leave sheds and garages unlocked even if you are in the house.
• Make it difficult for people to enter rear gardens with use of substantial fencing and thorny shrubs. If that is not possible make those areas difficult for criminals to hide with security lights/CCTV but ensure the equipment is out of reach.
• Secure motor cycles with a substantial chain to the floor.
• Mark garden tools and ornaments by engraving or painting so they cannot be sold on easily.
• Engrave power tools, fishing tackle and sports gear like golf clubs if you store them in sheds.
• Do not above second hand items from dodgy sources. There is a market for stolen articles. Report information about people who trade in this way via www.safelinks.info.
• Do not leave garden tools or ladders outside to be used in burglary.
• Keep a watchful eye on your neighbours’ properties. Report anyone roaming around who may be looking for shed to break into. Call Police on 0845 60 60 222 if you see any suspicious activity. Call Police on 999 if you see a crime being committed.
• Form a neighbourhood watch group. The Humberside Association of Neighbourhood Watch Groups can help on 01482 444466.
