Government needs to follow through on anti-psychotic drugs recommendations
“Routine long term prescribing of anti-psychotic drugs must end,” said the Liberal Democrat MP.
Commenting on the publication of a Government review into the use of anti-psychotic drugs in the care of older people with dementia, Paul Burstow, who has led a 10-year campaign to highlight the risks of over- and inappropriate prescribing said:
“This review comes much too late for thousands of elderly people whose lives have been cut short by the reckless prescribing of anti-psychotic drugs.
“While these recommendations could make a real difference, the Government’s past record on implementation leaves a lot to be desired.
“It failed to follow through on a promise made seven years ago to ensure older people have regular medicine reviews. On the Government’s own figures that failure has cost the lives of nearly 13,000 older people.
“Routine long term prescribing of anti-psychotic drugs must end. If it does it will save lives.”
