Nick Clegg says that Brown has failed as war leader
Liberal Democrat leader, Nick Clegg said that Gordon Brown has failed to implement a successful strategy in Afghanistan and said that has “failed as a war leader”.
Mr Clegg said that as leader of the country, Mr Brown had been “lamentable” in explaining the reasons for the war.
Mr Clegg said:
“There has been a lamentable failure in the UK to explain exactly why we’re in Afghanistan and threat it poses to our national security”
Speaking before President Obama’s decision on whether he should send more troops, Mr Clegg said:
“There is no point in sending a single solider unless we have a strategy that works.”
He said that a strategy that considers local government as well as regional interests has to be implemented before the numbers of troops needed to carry it out it can be determined. Mr Clegg also admitted to being much more optimistic about a successful withdrawal but warned about the threat from Pakistan if it were to happen too soon.
“If after Obama’s announcement it appears that some of the elements I’ve spoken about have been overlooked, it will be time to question support for the strategy. No party should unconditionally support a war.”
