LALABOUR HAS TRAPPED WORKING FAMILIES IN POVERTY

August 11th, 2008 by Les Bonner

200,000 more children from working families are trapped in poverty than when Labour came to power - a rise of 10% since 1997. For the first time in eleven years, the majority of children living in poverty are from homes where at least one person is working.

In the UK, 52% of children who are living in poverty live in families in which someone is working. 48% children in poverty live in households where nobody works. In 1997, this was 46% and 54% respectively.

Commenting, Liberal Democrat Shadow Work and Pensions Secretary, Jenny Willott said: “Labour has neglected families who are trying to work their way out of poverty.

“Everyone agrees that no child should go without, but why has the Labour Government done nothing to change a system which keeps working families on the breadline?

“The tax system is totally unfair. Hard working families on low incomes should be paying less tax and keeping more of their hard-earned cash.”
